2012 was a fantastic year, for cinema goers, and DVD & Blu-Ray lovers alike. Four years and five movies worth of hard work paid off for Marvel Studios, as their flag-ship film, The Avengers,
became the third highest grossing film of all time. Visionary director
Christopher Nolan also completed his critically adored,
The Dark Knight, trilogy in mesmerising fashion.
Audiences were graced with a new, stylish James Bond film, and George Clooney charmed audiences in a more modest, emotionally engaging role than usual in The Descendants. In addition, Peter Jackson did a good job of matching his ground breaking Lord of the Rings trilogy, with the first installment of The Hobbit, entitled An Unexpected Journey.
As a result, 2013 has a steep hill to climb if it's going to reach the heights of its innovative predecessor. However, the early signs are positive as there is already a plethora of exciting titles scheduled for release over the next 12 months. Here is a brief list of the 13 films that are worth keeping track of in 2013, with special mentions for the top 3.

So, those 10 films are certainly worth generating a lot of excitement over. However, here are the top three that we really can't wait for. It seems as though, in terms of grand cinematic spectacles and epic stories, these three are going to take the cake in 2013.
3. Iron Man 3 - 26th April
Robert Downey Jr. will be reprising his role as witty, fan favourite billionaire, Tony Stark in 2013. This will be his fourth outing as the popular superhero, and seems to be the most intriguing film from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to date. Oscar winner Ben Kingsley is portraying Iron Man's arch nemesis The Mandarin, which makes the premise of Iron Man 3 fascinating enough in its own right. Add to that another villain in the form of the magnificent Guy Pearce, and a returning cast including Gwenyth Paltrow and Don Cheadle, the prospect is considerably appealing.
2. Star Trek: Into Darkness - 17th May
Television show, movie franchise, pop culture phenomenon. Star Trek has affected generation after generation, no pun intended. In 2009, director J.J. Abrams rebooted the films with a contemporary interpretation and generally received praise from critics, new audiences, and Trekkies past and present. 2013 will see the follow up to that film released, entitled Star Trek: Into Darkness. The ominous subtitle is an indication that this time around, the stakes will be higher and the emotional gravity will be much stronger. Captain Kirk and his team are set to do battle with British character actor Benedict Cumberbatch's mysterious villain, setting up a truly compelling conflict.

Superman will be receiving a reboot of his own this year, with Man of Steel ready to fly into theatres at the beginning of the summer. Zack Snyder, Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer have collaborated to produce a much more refined approach to a Superman film, making audiences and critics understandably enthusiastic about the upcoming release. The recent trailer indicates that Man of Steel will be a stripped down, emotive exploration of Superman's character, whilst taking the cinematic spectacle of his adventures to a visual level we have never quite seen before. Michael Shannon will be appearing as the main antagonist, the ruthless General Zod, while Academy Award winners Russell Crowe and Kevin Costner will be portraying Clark Kent's paternal and adoptive fathers respectively. This film could be exactly what Superman is in need of, following the disappointing Superman Returns in 2006.
